Growing up, I had a friend whose Dad was fairly young and semi-estranged. When he did see her, they would go to the movies, and he would put his arm around her and pretend to be her date. At the time they thought it was a funny way to freak people out.

But in reality my friend just wanted to be close to her Dad, who was barely ever around. And when he did things like this, it just fueled her confusion and desperation. I don't even want to think about the things she might not have told me about.
